Can I attain salvation or go to heaven by works?

A simple answer to that would be no. The bible has made it clear that there is one way through which we can enter the kingdom of God and that is through Jesus Christ. In chapter 3 of of the gospel of John, we read about Jesus and Nicodemus and Jesus made it clear that no one can enter the kingdom unless he/she is born-again. Romans Chapter 10 also sheds more light on what we are to believe and confess in order to be saved.
Works are good and God loves them but their position is clear. Works are the result of the changed man and we who have been re-created are supposed to operate in these good works.(Eph 2:8-10). Works can’t purchase salvation for it was purchased by Christ using his blood. It is accounted unto us as a gift not as wages.
To give you an illustration: When one steals say 500,000 and he is arrested and there is proof that he stole, he is convicted of his sin. Let us say that prior to his arrest, he gave some or even all to the poor. Does this mean he will not be convicted? Is his punishment less? Well, he may be commended by some but justice will judge him according to his sin. When Adam committed high treason and sold out to the devil, we became by nature the children of satan or of wrath and our manner of life was of sin. Jesus came and won our redemption by being the perfect sacrifice, taking out the handwriting of requirements which were against us and which we could never fulfil. Therefore whosever believes on him, his righteousness is a gift which is imputed to him/her by God and hence shall live.
