THIS IS THAT: PART 1-They Shall Prophesy (L) Inspiration Vs Revelation
As has been seen, when you speak out in fullness of the Spirit, the Spirit begins to input His own words into what you are saying. Generally this is to inspire and encourage - nothing more. 1Cor.14:4. Occasionally, though, revelation comes with it. The person that is speaking is not aware at the moment that he is bringing forth a revelation until he has spoken. After speaking then he goes back and checks up on what he said and then when he understands it the result is a revelation. Something is not a revelation until you get meaning out of it.
At times he does not understand it so it is more of just information that he searches until he gets further meaning. Peter shows us this dynamic.
1 Peter 1:10-12
10 Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:
11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
12 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.
These men prophesied or spoke by inspiration things they did not understand. After they spoke then they began to check up on what they had said to see what the Lord would reveal or make them understand about it. Then it was revealed. They spoke ahead of themselves. Because one is bubbling forth and the spirit is bubbling with him he says things he had not planned which may turn out to be revelations of past, present or future.
Jesus said the Spirit would show us things to come. John 16:13. He may do it while you are bubbling forth. In 1 Cor. 14:29, scripture says to let the prophets speak two or three and let the others judge. If anything be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace. If anything be ‘revealed’ does not mean if someone else gets inspired to speak. Revelation means understanding rather than inspiration or breath. To inspire means to breathe into. This one who is sitting aside may feel inspired but that is not the same as having a revelation. For good order he lets the other speak. However He is to speak if he has grasped a better understanding of what the one who is speaking is giving forth.
The person inspired does not realize he is saying anything revelatory until he examines what he is saying. The others sitting by, because they are examining what he is saying, realize it. In that sense meaning or revelation is opened up to them. In addition they are able to see whether any revelation of their own may improve this or not. If it does not there would be no reason to interject. It should not be competitive.
We see a case of revelation coming through a prophecy in the stories of Mary, Elizabeth and Zacharias.
Luke 1:39-55
39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah;
40 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
45 And blessed is she that believed for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.
48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
50 And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
51 He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
52 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
54 He hath helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
55 As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed forever.
They are just bubbling forth and revelation gets injected into what they are saying without them knowing it. The moment Mary’s greeting sounded in Elisabeth’s ear the whole thing was set in motion like a chain reaction. Mary too seems to have been set off by Elisabeth’s bubblings. She tumbled forth as well. Inspiration also means to put words into. Sometimes people put words into you. Elisabeth had no way of knowing Mary was the mother of her Lord. She had no way of knowing the Lord had spoken to her. Neither could she have known that Mary had believed and that therefore there would be a performance. All this came to her while she was speaking. These two ladies were not preachers. They were just yielding to the Spirit. They were generally speaking in the language of scripture, but as they did, He put revelation in their words. They were not necessarily looking for it.
The same thing happened a few months later when the boy was born and they were about to name him. When they asked Zacharias he wrote on a tablet that his name was John.
Luke 1:67-79
67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,
68 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
69 And hath raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;
70 As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:
71 That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;
72 To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;
73 The oath which he swore to our father Abraham,
74 That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,
75 In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.
76 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,
78 Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Zacharias also just speaks forth by the Spirit and is overflowing. Then revelation comes while he speaks. He tells how this is a fulfilment of the promises made to the fathers, that the boy would prepare the way of the Lord, that the Lord would give light to them that sit in darkness and so on…
Inspiration is the door to revelation. One must not manufacture revelations. You cannot have revelations on demand. To reveal means to open up. Only God can open up the secret things to you because the treasures of knowledge and wisdom are in Him. Col. 2:3. And God does not reveal to you all that He knows. He only lets you know what He wants you to know. The blessing here is that when you put yourself at the Spirit’s disposal then He can show you a thing or two every now and then. Then in the light of what He shows you it becomes possible to do things that would otherwise be impossible to you.
