THIS IS THAT: PART 1-They Shall Prophesy (F) The Spirit of Prophecy
Read Acts chapter 2
The above utterances are all streams flowing from that spirit of prophecy. It is beautiful to see how what Paul was saying tied in to what Peter said at Pentecost which tied in to what Joel foretold. The day of Pentecost was the beginning of that spirit of prophecy that Joel talked of being developed into the people. They began by speaking in tongues as a sign of being filled with the Spirit. Then Paul talked about fanning that gift into flame or keeping that fire burning. In another place he called it being aglow with the Spirit. That was to be done by continuing to speak in tongues.
Then next Paul talked about singing with tongues. Just as you exercised faith to speak in tongues now add that extra faith to sing in tongues. It takes more faith to sing because one would want to know whether what they were singing were interesting or not. Singing is on a higher level not only because it takes more courage but also because it is effectively more inspiring. One who can dare sing what he does not understand might employ a little more courage to interprete what is being said. Scripture promises that whoever can speak in a tongue may pray that he interprete. 1 Cor. 14:13. That makes it available to all Christians. But it is on a higher level.
I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the understanding also (vs. 15). That did not mean that you pray today in the spirit and tomorrow you pray in understanding as if you were taking turns. He just got through telling you that when you pray in an unknown tongue your understanding is unfruitful. vs. 14. So here he is telling you the next higher step from there - to get your understanding to be made fruitful in other words to interpret. A sentence that begins with ‘for’ or ‘therefore’ is always there for the sentence or remark that precedes it. So vs. 14 is there to justify vs. 13. You need to interpret in order to make your understanding fruitful.
So vs. 15 takes off on, ‘what is it then…’ to tell you how it is done. I will pray in the spirit and I will pray with the understanding also. It is not talking about taking turns but about interpreting. I will pray in the spirit and then I will pray the interpretation. I will sing with the spirit and then I will sing the interpretation. That may mean one prayer time or a period of doing that many times and building up courage to interpret. It takes more courage to interpret what is said or sung in tongues. In other words this may be saying pray long enough for the interpretation to come becomes you need to get tuned in to the Lord’s frequency.
People who pray 5 minutes and then wonder why they don’t get anything won’t get anything next time. People who pray once in a blue moon and then wonder why they never got a thing will not get a thing any time soon. These things build up the way a battery builds up. Jude 20. One way tongues edifies or builds up is by tuning you in better. 1Cor. 14:4. This suggests time. Speaking a lot in tongues gets a person deeper into the spirit. It looks like if a person can pray much in tongues they will find that it will take less and less time to get tuned in. If it took them two hours a few years ago it will take them 1 hour today and one day they will just be able to get ‘there’ immediately.
At times one will just find himself praying the interpretation or singing the interpretation without being aware of the changeover. There is no doubt if people started to interpret by faith you could make mistakes. However you speak with tongues and it does not bother you how accurate what you are saying is. It takes courage to pray in tongues, it takes courage to sing in tongues and it will yet take courage to interpret.
